Baptisms

Following Jesus through Baptism

Baptism is one of the great joys of church life.

It is a moment of celebration, obedience, and testimony, when someone publicly declares that they belong to Jesus Christ. Every baptism tells a story of grace and reminds us that God is still at work, still saving, and still calling people to follow Him.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

baptising them in the name of the Father

and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

–
Matthew 28:19 –

At Cornerstone Church Wirral, we love seeing people step into the waters with joy and confidence, responding to what God has already done in their lives.

What is Baptism?

Baptism is a joyful act of obedience for those who have trusted in Jesus Christ.

It is a visible sign of an invisible reality, a picture of our union with Christ in His death and resurrection. As someone goes down into the water, it shows that their old life has been put to death with Christ. As they are raised out of the water, it celebrates new life in Him.

Baptism does not save us. Jesus saves us.

Baptism is how we publicly respond to the grace we have already received.

Who is Baptism For?

At Cornerstone Church Wirral, baptism is for those who have personally trusted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

If you have repented of sin, believed the gospel, and want to follow Jesus, baptism is a natural next step of joyful obedience.

If you were baptised as an infant and now have personal faith in Jesus, you may wish to be baptised as a believer. We are always happy to talk this through pastorally and graciously. Differences on this point are not a barrier to belonging, membership, or serving within the life of the church.

If you are unsure whether baptism is right for you, we would love to help you think it through.

When Should I Be Baptised?

In the Bible, baptism follows faith without unnecessary delay.

It is not a reward for spiritual maturity and not a sign that you have everything figured out. Baptism is a beginning. It is a step of obedience taken in response to grace.

If you are trusting Jesus and wanting to follow Him, you do not need to wait until you feel perfect or completely confident. We would love to walk with you as you consider this step.

Young People and Baptism

We love seeing children and young people grow in faith and explore what it means to follow Jesus.

Because baptism is a public declaration of personal faith, we currently offer baptism from the age of 13 upwards. We believe this is generally a stage of life when young people are better able to understand the gospel and make a conscious decision for themselves.

This does not mean God is not at work in younger children. We rejoice in every sign of faith, curiosity, and growth. Our desire is simply to help young people take this step with understanding, confidence, and joy.

If you are a parent or a young person with questions about baptism, we would love to support you.

How Do Baptisms Work at Cornerstone?

We baptise believers by full immersion and usually celebrate baptisms within our gathered church life.

Those being baptised are invited to share a short testimony, often by video, to tell their story and help remove the pressure of speaking live. We will explain everything clearly, walk you through what to expect, and support you throughout the process.

Baptisms are always moments of joy for the whole church, as we celebrate together what God has done.
